Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway: India's First AI-Constructed, Bike-Free Route

Introduction to the Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway

The construction of the Lucknow-Kanpur expressway is underway with an investment of ₹2,800 crores. This expressway will be notable as the first in India to utilize Automated Intelligence Machine-Guided Construction technology. Additionally, it will be the first expressway in Uttar Pradesh to prohibit two-wheelers and certain small passenger vehicles, including autos and loaders.

Rationale Behind Vehicle Restrictions

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has provided insights into the decision to ban bikes, autos, and loaders on this expressway. They explained that the expressway will accommodate speeds of up to 120 km/h, making it unsuitable for smaller vehicles. Consequently, these vehicles will be completely restricted from using the route.

Monitoring and Enforcement Measures

Udit Jain, an administrative officer at PNC, confirmed that motorcycles and small cars will not be allowed on the Kanpur-Lucknow Expressway once it is completed. To enforce this ban, special monitoring systems will be established at toll booths along the expressway. Reports suggest that advanced technology and cameras will be employed to monitor traffic and relay visual data to toll management.

Speed Regulations on the Expressway

The NHAI has set a maximum speed limit of 120 km/h for cars on the expressway, while light vehicles will maintain the same limit. Heavy vehicles will be permitted to travel at a maximum speed of 80 km/h. The regulations do not specify speed limits for bicycles. Toll plazas will be strategically located after ramps, ensuring that vehicles entering the expressway are closely monitored.

Toll Booth Locations

Toll booths will be positioned at various points along the expressway. According to NHAI officials, the first toll plaza will be visible shortly after entering from Lucknow, located near Miranpur Pinwat. Additional tolls will be established at Khandedev, near Bani, close to Amarsas village, and another at Azad Nagar.
