Lovlina Borgohain Joins Delhi Police for Women's Safety Campaign
On Monday, Lovlina Borgohain, the gold medalist from the 2026 Asian Games, participated in a foot patrol alongside women police officers in the Rajouri Garden market area as part of a campaign by the Delhi Police focused on women's safety.
In an interview, Borgohain emphasized the significance of initiatives aimed at improving women's safety and fostering a sense of security that allows women to navigate freely. She stated, "This initiative by the Delhi Police is crucial for women's safety and the patrols are a great step forward. While winning medals for the country is important, the achievements of women at the recent Asian Games have been truly inspiring, instilling confidence that we can conquer our fears."
She further noted that addressing women's safety from various perspectives could yield positive outcomes in the future. "By tackling women's safety from multiple angles, we can create a lasting impact. Women desire the freedom to move confidently, making this initiative vital," she remarked.
Borgohain also highlighted the shared responsibility of female athletes to advocate for women's empowerment and contribute to the nation. "As female athletes, we have a collective duty to focus on our country and promote women's empowerment," she concluded.
Historic Gold at Asian Games
Borgohain marked her 29th birthday in a remarkable way by clinching the gold medal in the women's 75kg final at the 2026 Asian Games, defeating China's Bao Ziyi with a score of 5-0 on October 2. This victory marked India's first gold medal in this category.
The Gold-Medal Bout
In the final match, Lovlina showcased her skillful counter-punching against an aggressive opponent, securing a unanimous win. The Chinese boxer began the match with an aggressive approach, launching numerous punches in the first round, but Lovlina's patience paid off as she effectively countered, winning the round 3-2.
As the second round progressed, Bao continued to apply pressure, yet Lovlina's confidence grew, allowing her to land cleaner punches and win the round 4-1, establishing a 2-0 lead on the judges' scorecards.
With the gold medal in sight, Lovlina maintained her strategy in the final round, allowing Bao to advance while skillfully avoiding significant damage and seizing countering opportunities. The Indian boxer was awarded the round unanimously, culminating in a 5-0 victory and securing the Asian Games title.
