Lovlina Borgohain Advances to Medal Round

Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain has guaranteed herself a medal at the Commonwealth Games 2026 by receiving a bye into the women's 75kg quarter-finals. This means she does not need to compete in a bout to secure a podium finish.

Guaranteed Medal Through Bye

In boxing at the Commonwealth Games, each weight category awards two bronze medals, with both losing semi-finalists earning a bronze. Thus, reaching the semi-finals ensures a medal, as noted by Olympics.com.

Lovlina's direct progression to the semi-finals is due to the limited number of participants in the women's 75kg category, which includes only five boxers. The only quarter-final match is set for July 28, featuring England's Mary Kate Smith against Nigeria's Patricia Mbata. Alongside Lovlina, Australia's Emma-Sue Greentree and Tuvalu's Tarona Taafaki have also advanced directly to the semi-finals.

Significant Achievement for the Olympic Medalist

The 28-year-old, who won a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and is a former world champion, will compete against Taafaki in the semi-finals on July 31, with a chance to reach the final. This will mark Lovlina's first medal at the Commonwealth Games, regardless of its color.

Previously, Lovlina was eliminated in the quarter-finals at the Gold Coast 2018 after losing to the eventual champion Sandy Ryan, and she faced an early exit at Birmingham 2022. She participated in the 69kg category during both events. This upcoming medal will complete her collection from all major multi-sport events she is eligible for, having already secured medals at the Olympics and Asian Games, according to Olympics.com.

Other Indian Boxers Competing

In addition to Lovlina, several other Indian boxers will be in action, including Kapil Pokhariya (men's 90kg), Narender Berwal (men's +90kg), Jaismine Lamboria (women's 57kg), Priya Ghanghas (women's 60kg), Parveen Hooda (women's 65kg), and Arundhati Choudhary (women's 70kg). A win for any of them will also guarantee a medal.

The boxing events for Glasgow 2026 are scheduled from July 24 to August 1 at the Scottish Event Campus, specifically in Hall 5. Preliminary rounds will take place from July 24 to 29, while the medal matches are set for July 31 and August 1.
