Lovlina's Journey to the Top

GUWAHATI, March 2: Lovlina Borgohain has experienced a year filled with introspection, challenges, and ultimately, triumph. The Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist is set to lead a 20-member Indian team at the Asian Boxing Championships 2026, taking place in Mongolia from March 28 to April 11.

The selection of the squad followed a rigorous month-long evaluation, with boxers joining the ongoing national camp after the National Championships held in January.

For the athlete competing in the 75kg category, 2026 has started on a positive note. She secured the national title at the National Boxing Championships in Noida in January and later won gold at the Boxam Elite International 2026 in Spain. In the final of the 75kg category, she showcased her signature control and composure, winning 4-1 against England’s Mary-Kate Smith.

In a recent phone conversation from the national camp in Patiala, Lovlina expressed confidence and calmness, a stark contrast to the uncertainty she felt post-Paris Olympics.

“It’s wonderful to be on the winning side and to bring medals for my country,” she shared.

However, her journey back to form was not without its hurdles.

“Last year was tough. After the Paris Olympics, I felt lost and uncertain about my next steps,” she reflected.

At the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool later that year, she was eliminated in the second round, leading to breaks from competition and time away from the sport.

“Eventually, my inner drive pushed me to take boxing seriously again. I realized that if I commit to boxing, everything else will align,” she noted. “I understood that I couldn’t juggle multiple pursuits at once. My main focus must be boxing.”

This newfound clarity, she believes, has been pivotal.

“Boxing has always been my top priority. Recognizing that has been incredibly beneficial. I aim to give my all until I retire,” she stated.

Additionally, the establishment of the Lovlina Borgohain Boxing Academy in North Guwahati in June 2025 has provided her with emotional support. Mentoring young boxers has given her fresh perspective and renewed motivation.

“I strive to become the best version of myself. While I can’t control the outcomes, I can prepare myself mentally, physically, and strategically. If I perfect my approach, the results will follow,” she emphasized.

The upcoming Asian Championships hold special importance. According to the selection criteria, finalists in designated weight categories for the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games 2026 will secure direct entries into those events. The Asian Games are set to take place in Japan in September and October.
