Lok Sabha Revokes Suspension of Eight Opposition MPs Amidst Controversy
Suspension of Opposition MPs Annulled
On Tuesday, the Lok Sabha voted to overturn the suspension of eight opposition members through a voice vote. The proposal was introduced by Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju after Congress Whip K. Suresh expressed regret over the inadvertent errors made by some members. Support came from Dharmendra Yadav of the Samajwadi Party and Supriya Sule from the Nationalist Congress Party.
The suspension had originally taken place on February 3 during the first part of the budget session, where seven Congress MPs and one CPI(M) MP were penalized for unruly behavior.
Details of the Suspended MPs
The suspended members included Congress MPs Manickam Tagore, Amarinder Singh Raja Wadding, Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Hibi Eden, Dean Kuriakose, Prashant Padole, Kiran Kumar Reddy, and S. Venkatesan from the Marxist Communist Party. Following their suspension, these MPs staged a protest at the entrance of Parliament on the day of proceedings.
In response, the Lok Sabha Secretariat issued a bulletin reminding MPs to maintain decorum within the parliamentary premises. This bulletin referenced guidelines under Section 124A(2)(3), which restrict certain activities to ensure that the areas and pathways remain open and unobstructed for MPs. It explicitly prohibited the carrying of weapons, flags, posters, sticks, spears, swords, and bricks within the premises.
Guidelines for MPs
Repeated instructions have been given to MPs to refrain from bringing or displaying posters, placards, or banners. The bulletin also noted that in some instances, offensive AI-generated images, pictures, and slogans were displayed on posters and placards. MPs have been reminded to strictly adhere to guidelines 124A(2)(3) and other relevant rules to avoid disciplinary actions.
On Monday, Congress raised the issue of the suspension of the eight opposition MPs in the Lok Sabha, urging Speaker Om Birla to revoke their suspensions. Opposition parties had previously appealed to the government and Speaker Om Birla to lift the suspensions of these eight MPs.
