Lok Sabha Motion Passed Amid Protests; Controversies Surrounding Political Figures

Lok Sabha Motion of Thanks Passed Without PM's Response

The Lok Sabha has approved the Motion of Thanks regarding the president's address, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not deliver his usual reply due to ongoing protests from the Opposition. This marks the first instance since 2004 that the prime minister has been unable to respond to the motion in the Lok Sabha.

The Opposition's protests stem from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi being barred from citing an excerpt from an unpublished memoir by former Indian Army chief MM Naravane, which discusses political decisions made during the 2020 border tensions with China.

In 2004, the Bharatiya Janata Party, then in Opposition, had similarly obstructed Manmohan Singh from addressing the motion.

Modi was scheduled to speak in the Lower House at 5 PM on Wednesday, but the session was adjourned until Thursday due to the protests, and his speech ultimately did not occur.

Mumbai Police Investigate British Doctor's Activities

Mumbai Police have alleged that British doctor Sangram Patil's visit to India on a tourist visa and his social media posts are part of a coordinated effort to disseminate defamatory content about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This assertion was made in an affidavit responding to a criminal writ petition filed by Patil in the Bombay High Court.

The police expressed concern over the situation and stated they are investigating the actual purpose of Patil's visit.

The case against him originated from a complaint by a BJP leader, who accused Patil of intentionally posting misleading and defamatory content about the party and its leaders. Patil was detained at Mumbai airport on January 10 but was later released after being instructed to participate in the investigation.

In his petition, Patil claimed he is being targeted for political motives and that the legal action is an abuse of criminal law aimed at stifling dissent.

Tragic Incident at Meghalaya Coal Mine

A suspected dynamite explosion at an unauthorized coal mine in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district has resulted in the deaths of at least 16 workers. Rescue operations are currently underway for additional workers who may still be trapped.

Jan Suraaj Party Challenges Bihar Elections in Supreme Court

The Jan Suraaj party, led by former poll strategist Prashant Kishor, has approached the Supreme Court to contest the conduct of the upcoming 2025 Bihar Assembly elections. They allege that the state government misused a cash transfer scheme to sway voters ahead of the elections.

The petition calls for new elections, highlighting that the National Democratic Alliance secured 202 seats in the 243-member Assembly, while the Opposition Mahagathbandhan won only 35 seats. Despite fielding candidates in 238 constituencies, Jan Suraaj did not win any seats.

Prior to the elections, the state government transferred Rs 10,000 to the bank accounts of women under a scheme designed to assist one woman per family in starting a small business. This payment was made in October, amidst a series of welfare initiatives announced by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, despite the Model Code of Conduct being in effect, according to Jan Suraaj.
