Intense Protests Erupt in Kokrajhar

Kokrajhar, June 12: In a significant and charged demonstration, numerous residents from the Bashbari region in Parbatjhora, Kokrajhar district, voiced their strong opposition to the proposed Adani thermal power project on Thursday.

The demonstrators accused the BTR government of planning to allocate 3,400 bighas of land for the project without any prior consultation with the community. They argued that this decision poses a threat to their livelihoods and infringes upon their constitutional rights.

The atmosphere escalated as protesters confronted government and police representatives who had come to mark the land. The protesters stood firm, compelling the officials to withdraw in light of their unwavering resolve.

“We will not allow this to happen. We are committed to safeguarding our land and rights at any cost,” declared one protester, reflecting the collective sentiment of the group.

This protest is not an isolated incident; locals have been actively demonstrating against the project for the past three months, insisting that their rights be acknowledged. They are resolute in their fight to protect their land and way of life, rejecting any decisions that jeopardize their existence.

Earlier on Thursday, Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah convened a private meeting with Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) leader Hagrama Mohilary at Mohilary’s Bathou Kherai resort in Kokrajhar.

“We discussed the land issue concerning Parbatjhora. Representatives from the company were also present to seek advice from Jayanta Mallabaruah on how to address the concerns of the people,” Hagrama stated.

Both the minister and Hagrama emphasized that their meeting was strictly personal and devoid of any political discussions.
