Local Elections Heat Up in Kerala: BJP's Sonia Gandhi Gains Attention

Sonia Gandhi Emerges as a Key Candidate

In the Munnar Panchayat, Sonia Gandhi, a candidate from the BJP, has become a focal point for local residents. Despite sharing a name with the former Congress president, her political journey has taken a distinct path. Her late father, Dura Raj, was a senior Congress leader and an active worker in the Nallathanni Kallar area. Out of respect for Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and affection for his newborn daughter, he chose to name her after the former party president. However, after her marriage, Sonia's political stance shifted. Her husband, Subhash, is an active BJP worker and currently serves as the Panchayat General Secretary. A year and a half ago, he contested as the BJP candidate in a by-election for the old Munnar Mulakkada ward. Following in her husband's political footsteps, Sonia Gandhi is now running as a BJP-supported candidate, sparking curiosity and discussions in the local elections.

Congress Faces Unique Challenge

Congress candidate Manjula Ramesh is now confronted with an unusual challenge, as her main rival is BJP's Sonia Gandhi, whose name quickly captures public attention. It is evident that the Congress candidate may feel uneasy, given that historically, candidates with similar names have caused confusion among voters, potentially splitting the vote in this closely contested Panchayat election.
