Lionel Scaloni Addresses Controversy Ahead of Argentina's Quarterfinal Match Against Switzerland
Scaloni Responds to Allegations of Favoritism
Lionel Scaloni, the head coach of Argentina, has spoken out regarding the favoritism allegations as his team prepares for the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinal against Switzerland, scheduled for Saturday, July 11, at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City.
The recent Round of 16 match, where Argentina triumphed 3-2 over Egypt, was overshadowed by controversy. Egypt's coach, Hossam Hassan, accused FIFA of bias and claimed that the match was manipulated to favor the defending champions. He suggested that both internal and external factors influenced the outcome, asserting that FIFA and the officials were intent on keeping Argentina and Lionel Messi in the tournament.
The uproar from Egypt regarding officiating during their match against Argentina has sparked widespread discussion on social media platforms, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), with fans expressing mixed reactions.
Scaloni's Take on External Criticism
In light of the upcoming quarterfinal against Switzerland, Scaloni addressed the ongoing criticism regarding his team's performance and the claims of bias.
During a press conference, he expressed that he remains unfazed by the external chatter and conspiracy theories, stating, 'There are people who don't want Argentina to win, and that is part of the game.'
"It's been a long time, 40 years since 1986, right? They were saying we were favored back then too. So it's not something new. Argentina has always been a team that stirs up the tournament," Scaloni remarked.
He acknowledged that the skepticism surrounding Argentina's success is normal, especially since they won the last World Cup, which may lead to increased opposition from fans of other teams.
Controversial Match Details
Argentina faced a potential upset when Egypt took a 2-0 lead, but a remarkable comeback featuring goals from Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi, and Enzo Fernandez in the last 13 minutes secured a 3-2 victory.
Egyptian players expressed their frustration over several officiating decisions, including a disputed VAR call that disallowed an Egyptian goal and a denied penalty appeal, which they believe directly impacted their chances of winning.
Scaloni Defends Team's Integrity
Further discussing the contentious Round of 16 victory, Scaloni defended his players' determination, stating that they use external criticism as motivation. He emphasized his trust in the integrity of the tournament and the objectivity of VAR protocols.
"We use the criticism or the comments that are made to rebel. To stage a rebellion and make the players play even better," he stated.
"With VAR, it's very hard for anyone to manipulate the game. There’s no room for double interpretation with VAR," he added.
Scaloni also mentioned that FIFA had clearly outlined the VAR procedures during a pre-tournament briefing, ensuring that the rules were followed strictly.
Looking Ahead
Argentina aims to secure a spot in the semifinals as they face Switzerland in the highly anticipated quarterfinal match in Kansas City. Should Argentina advance, they will meet either England or Norway at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Wednesday, July 15.
