Lionel Messi's Participation in FIFA World Cup Remains Uncertain
Concerns Surrounding Messi's World Cup Involvement
As the FIFA World Cup approaches in just over two months, questions linger regarding whether Lionel Messi will participate in Argentina's title defense. Manager Lionel Scaloni indicated that Messi's involvement hinges on his "attitude and physical condition."
In a recent friendly match against Mauritania, Messi came off the bench but did not score, although Argentina secured a 2-1 victory. The team enters the World Cup as reigning champions, set to take place from June 11 to July 19, but Messi's status remains a significant concern.
Manager Scaloni Defers to Messi's Decision
When asked about Messi's potential participation in the World Cup, Scaloni stated in a press conference, "That is more of a question for him."
The 47-year-old coach expressed his commitment to ensuring Messi's presence, emphasizing, "I believe, for the sake of football, he must be there. It is not for me to decide. It is up to him, his attitude and his physical condition."
Scaloni acknowledged that not only Argentina's fans but the entire football community wishes to see Messi compete. However, he affirmed that Messi deserves the space to make his own decision.
"We are in no hurry. We know that whatever he decides, it will be the best for the team and for him," he added.
Messi's Impressive Career Highlights
Statistically, Messi stands as Argentina's most accomplished footballer, boasting 115 goals and 196 caps.
He achieved the pinnacle of his career during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, finally winning the prestigious title after previously falling short against Germany in 2014.
Argentina's Upcoming World Cup Matches
In the forthcoming tournament, Argentina will compete in Group J against Austria, Jordan, and Algeria. Their first match is scheduled against Algeria in Kansas City on June 16.
Prior to the World Cup, Argentina will play two friendly matches, including one against Mauritania (already completed) and another against Zambia on April 1. This match against Zambia could potentially mark Messi's last appearance in Argentina's colors on home soil.
