Messi's Grand Finale at Arun Jaitley Stadium

Argentine football icon Lionel Messi captivated fans during his visit to the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in New Delhi, marking the conclusion of his four-city GOAT India Tour. Prior to New Delhi, Messi had made stops in Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Mumbai, culminating in a memorable fan interaction and ceremonial event at the stadium.

A Warm Welcome for the Football Legend

The football superstar, currently with Inter-Miami, received an enthusiastic welcome at the Delhi venue. He engaged in entertaining activities with young football enthusiasts, kicked footballs into the audience, and met notable figures such as ICC chairman Jay Shah, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and DDCA President Rohan Jaitley, who honored Messi and his Inter Miami teammates, Luis Suarez and Rodrigo de Paul, in front of a cheering crowd.

Special Gifts from Jay Shah

Jay Shah, who previously served as BCCI secretary before becoming ICC chairman, presented Messi with an India T20 jersey featuring his famous 'No.10' and name. Additionally, Shah gifted a cricket bat signed by Team India players from the T20 World Cup-winning squad last year, along with an invitation to the upcoming T20 World Cup match against the USA.

Messi's Confusion Over Indian Jersey

During the ceremony, Messi appeared momentarily puzzled about whether he was receiving a cricket or football jersey from Jay Shah. A viral video captured the moment when Messi examined the jersey and noticed two stars above the BCCI crest, prompting him to inquire about their significance from Rodrigo de Paul. This confusion stemmed from the fact that India has yet to win a FIFA World Cup, unlike their cricket achievements.

Understanding the Stars on Jerseys

India's T20 jersey features two stars, commemorating the cricket team's World Cup victories in 2007 and 2024. In contrast, the Indian football team does not have any stars above their crest, highlighting the difference in achievements between the two sports. Argentina, represented by Messi, boasts three stars on their national team crest, symbolizing their FIFA World Cup wins in 1978, 1986, and 2022.

Messi's Tour Continues with Wildlife Experience

Following the Delhi event, Messi and his Inter-Miami teammates traveled to Jamnagar, Gujarat, at the invitation of Anant Ambani, son of Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani. They visited Vantara, a wildlife rescue initiative founded by Ambani, where they participated in traditional rituals and explored the sanctuary's wildlife facilities, engaging in photo sessions with rescued animals and learning about conservation efforts.

A Historic Conclusion to the GOAT India Tour

Messi's GOAT India Tour officially concluded after the visit to Vantara, marking a significant four-city journey that celebrated his return to India after 14 years. His last visit was in 2011 when he played a friendly match against Venezuela in Kolkata. Messi is set to return to action for Inter Miami's friendly matches in January 2026, ahead of the MLS season starting in February.
