Severe Punishment for Sexual Harassment at Anna University

On Monday, a Mahila Court imposed a life sentence of at least 30 years without the possibility of remission on Gnanasekaran, who was found guilty of sexually harassing a student on the Anna University campus in December of the previous year. Judge M Rajalakshmi, who delivered the verdict on May 28, issued sentences for each of the 11 charges substantiated by the prosecution.

Public Prosecutor Marry Jayanthi commented, "Today, we received the verdict in the Gnanasekaran case, which includes a 30-year sentence without remission. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) conducted a thorough inquiry, leading to a charge sheet being filed in the Mahila Court. On April 30, the affected women presented their testimonies, and the evidence was deemed satisfactory by the court, resulting in today’s judgment. The maximum penalty of life imprisonment has been imposed in this case."

The incident involved a second-year student at Anna University who was sexually assaulted on campus in December. Following an investigation, the Chennai Police apprehended Gnanasekaran.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin praised the state police and the legal team for their swift handling of the case, which concluded in just five months. In a post on social media, he emphasized the importance of preventing crime and ensuring that no perpetrator escapes justice. He criticized opposition parties for attempting to politicize the incident.

Opposition leader Edappadi Palaniswamy welcomed the court's decision, alleging that the ruling DMK had attempted to shield the accused, who is reportedly a supporter of the party. He stated, "The Chennai Mahila Court has sentenced Gnanasekaran, and the DMK has engaged in various tactics to protect him. The AIADMK has consistently advocated for justice for the victim through public protests and social media campaigns."
