Life Imprisonment for Man Convicted of Raping and Murdering Minor in Odisha

In a significant ruling, a court in Jajpur district, Odisha, sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the heinous crime of raping and murdering a young girl nearly nine years ago. The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Bijay Kumar Jena, delivered the verdict on Saturday, also imposing a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict, identified as Sheik Mohit, for his brutal actions against a 5-year-old tribal girl.
The court's decision was based on the testimonies of 35 witnesses, highlighting the gravity of the crime. Additionally, the court mandated that the district legal service authority provide Rs 5 lakh in compensation to the mother of the victim.
Sheik Mohit was found guilty of the horrific crime, which involved the rape and murder of the minor. According to the prosecution, Mohit, who operated a scrap shop near the Ferro Chrome Plant in Jajpur Road in 2016, lured the girl to his shop under the pretense of buying glass bottles. Once alone, he assaulted her and subsequently strangled her to eliminate any evidence. He then concealed her body in a sack and discarded it on the railway tracks close to the Jajpur Road Railway Station.
Following a complaint lodged by the victim's family, local police conducted an investigation that led to Mohit's arrest.
