Udalguri Court Delivers Justice in Double Murder Case


Kalaigaon, July 3: A Sessions Court in Udalguri has sentenced Neeraj Sarma to life imprisonment along with a monetary penalty in connection with a double murder case.


Neeraj was found guilty of murdering his two minor stepbrothers. He was arrested by the police in Tangla.


The verdict was delivered by Session Judge N Senabaya Deori on June 30.


The case began when Gita Sarmah filed a complaint at the Tangla Police Station on December 21 of last year, reporting that her sons, Gaurab Sarmah (13) and Kaushik Sarmah (12), had gone missing on December 20, 2024, around 8:30 AM while returning from Kendriya Jatiya Vidyalaya.


The police acted swiftly, and based on the parents' statements, discovered the bodies of the two boys in the Sastrapara forest near Tangla, both with fatal injuries to their necks.


Neeraj Sarma, the stepbrother of the victims, was arrested shortly after the incident. The police filed a comprehensive charge sheet soon after.


Taking into account the severity of the crime, Judge N Senabaya Deori sentenced Neeraj Sarma to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of twenty thousand rupees under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023.


Additionally, for the offense under Section 140(1) of BNS 2023, he received a ten-year rigorous imprisonment sentence and a fine of ten thousand rupees.


The court also mandated that the secretary of the District Legal Service Authority in Udalguri provide ten lakh rupees as compensation to the victims' family after proper verification.


Residents of Udalguri expressed their gratitude to the police and senior officials for their prompt investigation, which led to the swift prosecution of the offender.
