Liam Dawson's Retirement Announcement

Liam Dawson has officially declared his retirement from First-Class cricket, marking the end of a notable career with Hampshire County Cricket Club and the England national team.

At 36 years old, the all-rounder will still participate in the Vitality Blast and the One Day Cup for Hampshire, as stated on the club's website. Dawson has played more than 200 red-ball matches for Hampshire, accumulating over 10,000 runs and claiming over 350 wickets. He also made four Test appearances for England, where he scored an unbeaten 66 on his debut in India and took eight wickets, including the dismissal of Yashasvi Jaiswal with his seventh delivery upon his return to Test cricket in 2025.

Dawson Reflects on His Decision

"I've made the decision to retire from First-Class cricket. This choice wasn't easy, but I believe it's the right step to extend my career in white-ball formats. I take immense pride in having played over 200 matches for Hampshire and cherish the incredible memories I've created with numerous teammates over the years. I am fully dedicated to white-ball cricket for Hampshire and look forward to continuing our success. To the fans and members who have supported us throughout the years, I am deeply grateful. Hampshire will always be my home, and I eagerly anticipate playing in front of you all at Utility Bowl soon," Dawson expressed, according to the Hampshire website.

A Career Filled with Achievements

In 2024, Dawson was honored with the PCA Men's Player of the Year award, becoming the first domestic player to achieve this since 2018. That same season, he also secured the PCA Men's Domestic Overall MCP and the Vitality County Championship Player of the Year titles.

Following his impressive performances in 2024, Dawson was recognized as one of Wisden's Five Cricketers of the Year, making him the first Hampshire player to receive this accolade since Kevin Pietersen in 2006.

Dawson will be remembered as one of Hampshire's modern legends. Among Hampshire's male players in the 21st century, only Robin Smith, Jimmy Adams, and James Vince have surpassed his run tally. He recorded 54 half-centuries and 17 centuries, with a personal best of 171 runs achieved during Hampshire's victory over Kent at Canterbury in 2022, contributing to the team's third-place finish in the County Championship.

Hampshire's Tribute to Dawson

From 2023 to 2024, Dawson experienced a remarkable phase with both bat and ball, scoring 1,796 runs over two Championship seasons, including nine fifties and six centuries, while also taking 103 wickets at an average of 22.69, featuring eight five-wicket hauls.

"Liam has been an exceptional asset to Hampshire Cricket. Playing over 200 First-Class games for this county highlights his commitment and skill. His departure leaves a significant gap in the team, making him hard to replace, especially for the ongoing Championship season. He is the only Hampshire player in the modern era to achieve over 200 First-Class appearances, underscoring the rarity of this accomplishment. We fully support Liam's decision and are thrilled that he remains dedicated to white-ball cricket. He has been crucial to our success in that format, and we are confident he will continue to be a key player for Hampshire in the years ahead. He remains an integral part of our plans," stated Giles White, Hampshire's Director of Cricket.

Throughout his County Championship journey, Dawson finished as a runner-up in 2024 and third in 2022. He played a vital role in the club's promotion from Division Two in 2014, maintaining their position in Division One for 11 consecutive years.
