Neil Sedaka, renowned for his timeless hit “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do,” has passed away at the age of 86, as confirmed by his representative on Friday. His family expressed their profound sorrow over his unexpected demise, describing him as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He leaves behind his wife, Leba, along with his daughter Dara, son Marc, and three grandchildren, as reported by Billboard. Sedaka's death occurred shortly after he was taken to a hospital in Los Angeles due to feeling unwell earlier that day, according to a family source.


Neil Sedaka: A Musical Journey

Born on March 13, 1939, in Brooklyn, New York, Sedaka began his musical journey as a teenager in the 1950s, quickly rising to fame as one of the first teen pop sensations. He initially formed the doo-wop group The Tokens before collaborating with his neighbor Howard Greenfield, leading to one of the most fruitful songwriting partnerships in pop music history. Between 1959 and 1964, they achieved remarkable success, selling around 40 million records.


Throughout his career, Sedaka had 30 songs that made it to the Billboard Hot 100, with notable hits like “Bad Blood,” “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do,” and “Laughter in the Rain.” He achieved nine top 10 singles, three of which reached the No. 1 spot. Additionally, he placed 11 albums on the Billboard 200, with his 1975 release, The Hungry Years, peaking at No. 16.


In April 2024, Sedaka entered into a significant agreement with Primary Wave, which acquired a stake in the master and publishing rights to his entire music catalog, encompassing everything he had written or recorded, including works for other artists.


Throughout his illustrious career, Sedaka received five Grammy nominations and numerous accolades, including his induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. He was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and received prestigious international awards such as the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award and a Special International Award from The Ivors.


In addition to his music, Sedaka made numerous television appearances, being one of the first musical guests on Saturday Night Live and later serving as a guest judge on American Idol during its original run on Fox.
