Legal Action Demanded Against Mehbooba Mufti for Alleged Disrespect of National Flag
Police Complaint Filed in Jammu
On August 5, a police complaint was lodged in Jammu, calling for legal action against Mehbooba Mufti, the president of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), for allegedly disrespecting the national flag during a protest in Srinagar the previous day. An official reported that the complaint was filed at the Pacca Danga police station by Neeraj Sharma, a senior cardiologist and social activist, who urged the police to initiate action, including the registration of a First Information Report (FIR).
During a sit-in protest outside the PDP office in Srinagar on Tuesday night, Mufti was reportedly seen holding the national flag upside down. This protest was against the central government's revocation of Article 370 and Article 35A, which stripped Jammu and Kashmir of its special status in August 2019.
In his complaint, Sharma alleged that videos and images from the incident show Mufti holding the flag with the saffron band facing downward. He stated that this act not only disrespected the national flag but also deeply hurt the sentiments of all patriotic citizens. The complaint requests the police to investigate the matter and take immediate legal action, including filing an FIR.
