Renowned tennis player Leander Paes, who has clinched 18 Grand Slam titles, officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday, March 31, ahead of the upcoming West Bengal assembly elections. Voting for these elections is scheduled to take place in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with the counting of votes set for May 4. Paes made his entry into the BJP at the party's headquarters in the national capital, accompanied by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and Sukanta Majumdar. There are speculations about his candidacy in the West Bengal elections.

Leander Paes expressed his gratitude towards Prime Minister Modi, Union Minister Amit Shah, and BJP National President Nitin Gadkari for the opportunity he has received. Who is Leander Paes?

Leander Paes is celebrated as one of India's greatest tennis players and a global icon in doubles tennis. He is an Olympic medalist and holds the unique distinction of being the only tennis player to have participated in seven Olympic Games. Paes won a bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, making him the first Asian to earn an Olympic medal in tennis. He has also achieved remarkable success in Grand Slam tournaments, winning multiple titles in men's doubles, including three each at the French Open and US Open, and one each at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Additionally, he has secured 10 Grand Slam titles in mixed doubles, establishing himself as one of the most successful doubles players in tennis history. A significant part of his successful career has been his partnership with Mahesh Bhupathi, another of India's tennis legends. In recognition of his outstanding achievements in tennis, Paes is set to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2024. He currently serves as the president of the Bengal Tennis Association.
