Imphal, April 9: A 32-year-old attorney from Manipur reportedly attempted to set himself on fire on Thursday outside the Lok Bhavan (Raj Bhavan) gate in Imphal. This act was a protest against the recent bombing in Tronglaobi, Bishnupur district, which resulted in the tragic deaths of two young children.
The individual, named Sinam Apollo, arrived alone on a motorcycle and poured kerosene over himself near the heavily secured entrance. He expressed his distress over what he described as an 'unsatisfactory situation' during a confrontation with police officers present at the scene.
As per police reports, he initially stated that he was there solely to protest and was briefly mistaken for a journalist. However, the situation escalated quickly when he drenched himself in kerosene, prompting the officers on duty to notice the strong odor.
One officer at the scene remarked, 'He was on the verge of igniting himself.'
Security personnel acted promptly, engaging him in dialogue and convincing him to refrain from taking such drastic measures. They assured him that no immediate actions would be taken against him and encouraged him to stay calm.
At one point, the lawyer expressed a desire to leave the area, but the police skillfully continued to communicate with him while additional officers from the city police arrived to provide support.
The attempt was ultimately thwarted without any injuries, and he was taken into custody for further questioning.
This incident occurs amidst rising tensions and protests throughout the Imphal valley following the devastating blast in Tronglaobi.
