Allegations Against a Local Lawyer

In Deogarh, a lawyer has been taken into custody by local authorities for allegedly raping a woman multiple times under the guise of marriage. This troubling case stems from a relationship that initiated on an Odia matrimonial platform.

The suspect, identified as Rohit Kumar Pradhan from Balita village, operates within the Deogarh District Court. According to police reports, the victim, residing in the Deogarh municipality, first connected with Rohit on February 19, 2021, through the matrimonial site. Their relationship quickly evolved into a romantic one, facilitated by social media and phone calls.

The victim claims that Rohit frequently visited her home. On June 29, 2021, he allegedly coerced her into a sexual encounter in a car at Chikini Ghat, despite her objections. Although she married another man on July 14, 2021, Rohit reportedly continued to harass her, threatening to expose intimate photos.

Under pressure from Rohit, the victim left her husband, believing he would marry her if she filed for divorce. Rohit is accused of taking her to various locations and maintaining a physical relationship while repeatedly promising marriage. However, when she sought to formalize their commitment, he postponed the discussions indefinitely.

The situation escalated when the victim was allegedly assaulted by Rohit and his family at his shop, Jagannath Enterprises, in Barkote. Following this incident, she lodged a complaint at the Deogarh police station on November 24, 2024. A case (No. 564/24) was subsequently filed against Rohit and his parents under several legal provisions.

After the case was registered, Rohit reportedly went into hiding and sought anticipatory bail from the High Court, which was denied on April 16. The court instructed him to surrender within 21 days, but he continued to evade capture.

A police team led by SI Rudra Narayan Pradhan successfully apprehended Rohit in the Forest Park area of Bhubaneswar before formally arresting him on Tuesday. He has since been presented in court and remanded to judicial custody.
