Inauguration of Vande Bharat Express Train

Today, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw flagged off the Vande Bharat Express, a 20-coach train connecting Jammu and Srinagar. This marks the first direct train service between the two capitals of the Union Territory. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office, Jitendra Singh, were also present at the event. The introduction of this direct train service is expected to reduce travel time and boost tourism in the region. It's noteworthy that Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first direct train service between Katra and Srinagar on June 6, 2025, and this service is now being extended to Jammu Tawi railway station.


Details of the Rail Project

The rail project, which amounts to approximately ₹43,780 crores, began in the late 1990s, with the first train operating in the Kashmir Valley in October 2008. An official stated, "The modern 20-coach Vande Bharat train will commence its first journey from Jammu Tawi to Srinagar, connecting the challenging geographical areas of the valley." Prior to the launch of the Jammu-Srinagar service, a trial run of the Vande Bharat train was conducted from Jammu to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra railway station on Tuesday. Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, the initial Vande Bharat train will cover a distance of 267 kilometers.


Service Schedule and Features

The Jammu-Srinagar train service is set to commence on May 2 and will operate six days a week, with no service on Tuesdays. Senior Commercial Manager, Ruchit Singhal, mentioned, "This Vande Bharat Express, built using indigenous technology, will provide passengers with a world-class travel experience."


Remarks from Officials

During the event celebrating the launch of this train service, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed gratitude to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and the central government. He stated, "Today, we have truly connected Jammu to Kashmir via rail... transforming this 8-coach train into a 20-coach train is a significant achievement. This will enable many more people to travel."
