Tragedy Strikes Sarol Village

Shubhash Mahajan

Chamba

Chamba district, already grappling with the aftermath of severe rainfall, faced another disaster late last night when a significant landslide hit Sarol village in Upper Gholti. The event transpired between 12:00 and 12:30 AM, as a massive boulder, weighing over 100 quintals, tumbled down the slope and crashed onto the roof of a residence owned by Parvinder Kumar, son of Dhiru Ram.

Destructive Force of the Landslide

The impact of the boulder was devastating. It obliterated the reinforced concrete roof of the house, leaving it in ruins. As it descended, the boulder uprooted trees, devastated fields, and flattened everything in its path before crashing onto the home.

Fortunately, the family members were in a different room at the time. Had the boulder struck where they were, it could have resulted in a catastrophic outcome. Nonetheless, the destruction was extensive, with household items, furniture, and personal belongings completely ruined.

Local Leaders Respond Promptly

Upon hearing about the incident, District Council Vice-Chairman Liyaqat Ali Khan quickly arrived at the scene to support the affected family. He ensured that the local Patwari recorded all necessary information and began the compensation process.

Recognizing the urgency, Khan reached out to Chamba Sadar MLA Neeraj Nair, who swiftly arranged for an immediate relief of ₹25,000 to assist the family.

Government Support Initiatives

The announcement of immediate financial aid and the promise of further compensation provided some solace to the distressed family. The Vice-Chairman reassured the victims that the state government offers up to ₹7 lakh compensation in such situations, and the necessary paperwork for the complete relief package has already been initiated. He also mentioned that the Deputy Commissioner of Chamba would soon deliver a relief kit containing essential supplies like food grains, drinking water, clothing, and other necessities to help the family cope with the immediate aftermath.

Community Concerns and Precautions

The landslide has raised significant concerns among residents of Sarol and nearby villages. With ongoing monsoon rains, there is a heightened fear of additional landslides. Locals have urged the administration to implement preventive measures, including monitoring at-risk slopes and relocating families from high-risk areas.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the precarious geography of Chamba district, where heavy rainfall frequently triggers landslides, posing a continuous threat to lives and property.

A Miraculous Escape

While the damage to Parvinder Kumar’s home is severe, the family's survival is viewed as miraculous. The enormous boulder, likened to the size of 'Bhima', could have easily resulted in fatalities had it landed in the occupied room. The family, though shaken, expressed gratitude for the prompt actions of local leaders and the immediate assistance provided.

Conclusion

The landslide in Sarol village highlights the susceptibility of Himachal Pradesh’s hilly regions to natural disasters. The quick response from District Council Vice-Chairman Liyaqat Ali Khan and MLA Neeraj Nair ensured that the affected family received immediate financial aid and the promise of further compensation.

As the monsoon season continues, authorities remain vigilant, with communities hoping for enhanced preventive measures to avert future disasters. For now, the resilience of Chamba's residents, along with the government's commitment to relief and rehabilitation, offers a glimmer of hope amid the devastation.
