Lakhimpur to Get Safe Drinking Water from Subansiri River

Chief Minister's Initiative for Clean Water Supply
Guwahati, June 16: In a significant move to provide clean and safe drinking water to the residents of Lakhimpur, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday that the town will now source its water from the Subansiri River, moving away from the use of deep tube wells.
Sarma explained, “Deep tube wells frequently contain harmful substances like arsenic and fluoride. To combat this issue, we will utilize water from the Subansiri River. A pipeline stretching 3,940 meters will be installed to facilitate this transition,” during the foundation stone laying ceremony for Phase II of the Lakhimpur town water supply initiative.
He also mentioned that Phase I of the project is currently in progress, with approximately 30% of the work already completed.
“Upon completion of both phases, the residents of Lakhimpur will have access to clean and safe drinking water. This advancement is largely due to the dedicated efforts of local MLA Manab Deka,” he added.
Phase I did not encompass several municipal wards, while Phase II aims to cover these remaining areas.
“Wards 8 to 14 were previously left out. With an investment of ₹64.99 crore and the hard work of legislator Deka, Phase II has been initiated and is projected to be finished within two years,” Sarma stated.
Addressing the current flood situation in the area, the Chief Minister remarked that timely construction of embankments has significantly reduced the impact, offering essential relief to the affected communities.
