Historic Announcement by Ladakh's Lieutenant Governor

The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinay Kumar Saxena, has declared the establishment of five new districts in the Union Territory, marking a significant milestone for the region. With this development, Ladakh will expand from the current two districts to a total of seven. The existing districts are Leh and Kargil.


New Districts in Ladakh

The newly formed districts include Nubra, Shyam, Changthang, Zanskar, and Dras. In a post on social media, the LG mentioned that he has approved the notification for the creation of these districts, fulfilling a long-standing demand of the local populace. He stated, "Today is a historic day for Ladakh. I have sanctioned the notification for the establishment of five new districts, which aligns with the aspirations and long-held demands of the people of Ladakh. With the addition of these five districts, Ladakh will now have seven districts instead of the previous two."


Approval from MHA in August 2024

He further noted that this initiative is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for a developed and prosperous Ladakh. The decision had previously received approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in August 2024. LG Saxena emphasized that the creation of new districts will enhance grassroots governance, decentralize administration, and ensure the swift delivery of public services, particularly in remote and inaccessible areas. He remarked, "This transformative decision, which was approved by the Ministry of Home Affairs under the leadership of Home Minister Amit Shah in August 2024, will strengthen governance at the grassroots level, decentralize administration, and ensure rapid delivery of public services to the people of Ladakh, especially those living in remote and challenging regions."
