In a devastating assault on Kyiv, at least nine individuals lost their lives and 22 others sustained injuries following a relentless barrage of ballistic missiles and drones launched by Russia overnight into Saturday, as reported by local authorities.

A five-story apartment building in the Solomianskyi District suffered significant damage due to falling debris, leading to a fire outbreak. Emergency responders managed to evacuate 35 residents from the upper levels, but tragically, two fatalities were confirmed, along with eight injuries, including two children, according to the state emergency service of Ukraine.

In the Darnytskyi District, the attack resulted in the deaths of seven people and injuries to 14 others, with fires igniting and causing destruction to homes, vehicles, and an administrative building, as detailed by emergency services.

Additionally, firefighters worked to extinguish a blaze in a non-residential structure located in the Shevchenkivskyi district. There were no further updates regarding earlier claims from the district's mayor about individuals being trapped in another residential building.

Reports indicated damage to both commercial and residential properties in two other districts of the city.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been advocating for increased support from the United States and other Western allies, emphasizing the urgent need for more Patriot anti-ballistic missile defense systems to counter the ongoing missile threats from Russia.

On Friday, Zelenskyy mentioned a conversation with U.S. Vice President JD Vance, reflecting on a recent meeting with President Donald Trump in Washington, which he characterized as constructive.

Zelenskyy reiterated the importance of air defense, particularly the acquisition of interceptors for Patriot systems to defend against ballistic missiles, in a post shared on Telegram.

During a NATO summit in Ankara in July, Trump indicated that the U.S. would permit Ukraine to manufacture Patriot systems. However, he seemed to retract that commitment during a Cabinet meeting at Camp David, Maryland, stating that a final decision had yet to be made.

The missile strikes on Kyiv occurred just two days after a significant Russian attack across Ukraine, which resulted in the deaths of 10 civilians and injuries to over 50, with a missile even breaching Polish airspace.

Liudmyla Nakonechna, 64, recounted her terrifying experience from a basement shelter as a second air raid alarm sounded. She described being jolted awake by loud explosions around 1:30 a.m.

"I rushed into the corridor just as the bathroom door was blown off its hinges and hit my leg," Nakonechna shared, noting her poor health following cancer treatment. "The sound of shattering glass was everywhere; my balcony was littered with glass, and the windows in my bedroom were shattered."

Having avoided shelters since Russia's full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, the escalating stress finally compelled her to seek refuge.

"It's getting worse every day," Nakonechna lamented. "Previously, attacks occurred once every two weeks or so, but now they happen almost daily."
