Kyiv Under Attack: Russian Missile Strikes Injure Five Ahead of Peace Talks
Missile Strikes in Kyiv
In the early hours of Saturday, missile explosions rocked Kyiv, injuring at least five individuals as Ukraine geared up for upcoming negotiations with Russia and the United States scheduled for next week.
Delegates from Russia, Ukraine, and the US are set to convene on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, for discussions aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict. This will mark the fourth round of negotiations facilitated by the Trump administration, following the last meeting held in Geneva in February.
Western nations supporting the peace talks are striving to establish a new approach to overcome the deadlock, while recognizing that issues related to territory and security remain contentious.
The missile strikes on Kyiv caused damage to residential buildings and commercial properties, disrupted traffic on a bridge over the Dnipro River, and led to further power and water outages, according to local and national officials.
Kyiv's Mayor, Vitali Klitschko, reported that energy infrastructure in both Kyiv and the Zhytomyr regions sustained damage due to the nighttime assault. The energy supply situation in the capital is critical, impacting heating and water services.
In southern Ukraine, recovery efforts are ongoing in the village of Komyshuvakha, which was severely impacted on Monday when multiple Russian guided bombs struck a former school and a nearby shelter where residents were awaiting humanitarian assistance.
After the attack on the makeshift aid distribution center, 55 individuals were confirmed dead, with two bodies recovered early Saturday. Many residents remain unaccounted for in the aftermath of the tragedy.
Komyshuvakha is situated close to the front lines in the Zaporizhzhia region.
