Missile and Drone Attacks Target Kyiv

In the early hours of June 2, Kyiv experienced a series of explosions as Russia initiated a fresh wave of missile and drone assaults across Ukraine. This escalation came shortly after Ukrainian officials had alerted the public about the possibility of a significant Russian offensive. The initial blast was detected around 1:30 AM local time, just before air raid sirens were activated. A subsequent round of intense explosions occurred at approximately 2:15 AM, leading to temporary power outages in the city, as reported by Kyiv Independent.

This overnight offensive followed multiple warnings from President Volodymyr Zelensky, who indicated that Ukrainian intelligence had observed indicators of an impending major attack from Russia. In a speech on May 29, Zelensky urged citizens to remain vigilant regarding air raid alerts and to take necessary precautions. He reiterated this caution the next day, emphasizing that while Ukraine's allies were in communication with Russia, the populace should be ready for possible strikes. "There is no expectation that anyone in Moscow will reconsider their actions," he stated.

Just hours prior to the latest assault, Zelensky reiterated that intelligence alerts were still active. He warned, "The intelligence alerts concerning Russian attacks are still valid. A significant strike could occur – they have made preparations. Our air defense forces are on standby 24/7, as much as current resources allow." These warnings coincided with increasingly explicit threats from Moscow. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reportedly informed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on May 25 that Russia planned to target Ukrainian "decision-making centers" and suggested that the United States evacuate its embassy in Kyiv. Following this, Russia's Foreign Ministry advised foreign nationals and diplomats to leave the capital, although no embassies have withdrawn personnel.

The recent attack follows one of the most extensive aerial bombardments of Kyiv in the past year. On May 24, Russia launched 90 missiles and 600 drones, causing damage to several key locations in the capital, including the Cabinet of Ministers, the Foreign Ministry, the Kyiv Opera Theater, the Ukrainian House, the Valeriy Lobanovskyi Dynamo Stadium, and the Chornobyl Museum. That assault resulted in two fatalities in Kyiv and over 80 injuries, with four deaths and nearly 100 injuries reported across Ukraine. The June 2 attack underscores the ongoing high tensions, with Ukrainian officials warning that the risk of further large-scale Russian strikes remains significant.
