Marschall's Stunning Victory

In a remarkable turn of events at the Stockholm Diamond League on Sunday, Australia's Kurtis Marschall triumphed over Olympic champion Armand Duplantis, bringing an end to the Swedish athlete's impressive streak of 40 consecutive wins in men's pole vault.

Duplantis, competing in front of his home crowd, aimed to surpass his own world record of 6.31 meters for the 16th time. However, he struggled to find his form and ultimately finished in second place, unable to clear the six-meter mark. Marschall clinched the win with a height of 5.90 meters on his third attempt, while Duplantis failed to clear both six meters and a final attempt at 6.05 meters.

Duplantis Reflects on His Loss

"It was time to lose; it has been a long time since my last defeat. Winning 40 in a row is quite unbelievable, but losing here in Stockholm, which is my most significant competition of the year, is tough," Duplantis shared with a local broadcaster.

"This won't be the last time I lose, but I hope it will be the last time in Stockholm. I will ensure that it doesn't happen again," he added.

The competition started poorly for the 26-year-old Swede, who missed his first attempt at 5.60 meters. Although he cleared it on his second try and successfully jumped 5.80 meters, he couldn't maintain his momentum as the bar was raised. Despite the setback, Duplantis remained optimistic, suggesting that his upcoming wedding might have distracted him. "You're either lucky in love or lucky in life. The wedding is approaching, so perhaps that's a silver lining to this experience," he remarked.

Highlights from the Diamond League

In other events at the Diamond League meeting, world champion Melissa Jefferson Wooden won the women's 100 meters with a time of 10.84 seconds.

American sprinter Kenny Bednarek excelled in the men's 200 meters, finishing in 19.87 seconds, the only athlete to break the 20-second barrier.

One of the day's highlights was the men's 800 meters, where 17-year-old American Cooper Lutkenhaus achieved a season-best time of 1:42.70, securing victory over Canada's Marco Arop, with Algeria's Slimane Moula finishing third.
