Kunal Kamra Faces Breach of Privilege Proceedings Over Controversial Parody Song

Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra is facing breach of privilege proceedings due to a parody song aimed at Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The proceedings, initiated by BJP legislator Pravin Darekar, have sparked significant reactions, including Kamra's retort on social media regarding public safety. This incident follows a tragic train accident in Mumbai that claimed four lives, which Kamra referenced in his comments. The privilege committee is now set to review the case, highlighting the ongoing tensions between political figures and comedians in India.

Kunal Kamra Faces Breach of Privilege Proceedings Over Controversial Parody Song

Breach of Privilege Proceedings Initiated

Mumbai: Proceedings for breach of privilege against comedian Kunal Kamra, stemming from his parody song aimed at Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, are set to commence shortly, as confirmed by a senior official on Saturday.

In response to this news, Kamra shared a report regarding the proceedings on social media platform X, stating, "The true breach of trust is allowing people to perish in public transport daily."

This comment appears to reference a tragic local train incident in Mumbai earlier this week that resulted in four fatalities.

The notice against Kamra, along with Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Sushma Andhare, was filed by BJP legislator Pravin Darekar during the budget session in March.

Legislature secretary Jitendra Bhole indicated that the notice has been sent to the privilege committee, which is chaired by BJP MLC Prasad Lad.

Lad confirmed that his committee convened to deliberate on the breach of privilege notice and has begun the process of issuing a notice to both Kamra and Andhare.

Known for his unfiltered comedic style that often targets politicians and celebrities, Kamra's parody song drew ire from supporters of Shinde.
