Emphasis on Red-Ball Cricket

Kuldeep Yadav, the Indian spinner, has expressed his commitment to excelling in red-ball cricket, aiming to consistently take wickets as an attacking bowler. His comments come in anticipation of the one-off Test match against Afghanistan, scheduled to begin on June 6. As a player for the Delhi Capitals (DC), he is expected to spearhead India's spin attack during this crucial encounter.


Having participated in the IPL 2026 season, Kuldeep underscored the significance of the upcoming Test series, particularly the five-match home series against Australia set for January to March next year. This series is pivotal for India's journey in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle, where India currently ranks sixth.


Mindset for Success

In an interview on JioHotstar, Kuldeep stated, "My primary focus is on being an attacking spinner who can secure breakthroughs for the team. I am entirely dedicated to red-ball cricket. With several key Test series on the horizon, especially the one against Australia, our performance in that series will be crucial for our WTC campaign."


He emphasized the necessity of maintaining the right mindset and effectively executing his role in Test cricket. Kuldeep believes that a robust spin attack can significantly influence a match's outcome, asserting that quality spinners are essential for a successful Test team, capable of taking wickets under any conditions.


Preparation for the Afghanistan Test

Discussing his preparations for the Afghanistan Test, Kuldeep shared insights on being the lead spinner. He mentioned that the training sessions have been productive, having completed two net sessions. Despite the absence of senior spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, he remains optimistic about the team's prospects.


Kuldeep noted that young talents like Harsh Dubey and Manav Suthar, who have received their first call-ups to the national team, along with Washington Sundar, are well-prepared due to their consistent participation in India A tours and domestic red-ball competitions. He remarked, "The preparations for the Afghanistan Test have been solid. Although we will miss Jaddu bhai and Axar, the young players have been performing well. They have been part of India A tours and are actively playing in the Duleep Trophy and Irani Trophy, which has kept them match-ready."
