Krunal Pandya Discusses Pressure and Innovation in IPL
Embracing Pressure as Champions
Krunal Pandya, an all-rounder for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), has shared insights on the mindset and challenges faced by defending champions in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He emphasized that pressure is an inherent part of competing at the highest level and should be welcomed rather than avoided.
During an appearance on JioStar's 'Superstars', Krunal reflected on the expectations tied to being title holders, highlighting the need for a straightforward approach in tense situations. He stated, "It's a great feeling to know we are the defending champions. Pressure is always present in high-stakes games, whether or not you hold the title."
Krunal mentioned that such high-pressure scenarios often inspire him to elevate his performance. "As an athlete, I prepare for challenging situations. When there's added pressure, it motivates me to excel," he remarked.
He also pointed out that experience is crucial in managing expectations, especially for senior players who mentor younger teammates during tough times. "Ultimately, it's just a game. You need to maintain the same approach... After nearly a decade at this level, I have valuable insights to share with my teammates as a senior player," he added.
Krunal concluded by stressing the significance of remaining calm and focusing on the fundamentals, regardless of the match circumstances or external pressures. "In the end, it's about keeping things simple, no matter the situation," he stated.
Innovating to Counter Evolving Batting
Krunal also discussed how the evolution of batting in the IPL has compelled bowlers to innovate and diversify their skill sets, particularly with the strategic use of bouncers and yorkers. "If you observe the IPL over the past decade, the striking capabilities of batters have transformed significantly. Power-hitting is continuously advancing," he noted.
He explained that bowlers must stay ahead of batters by adapting their strategies and enhancing their skill sets. "As a bowler, I've learned that adding variety to my bowling is essential. You need to be one step ahead of the batter, which is why bouncers and yorkers have become part of my arsenal," he elaborated.
Krunal clarified that this shift in his bowling style was not abrupt but rather a result of strategic planning and an understanding of match dynamics and batter psychology. "It wasn't a spontaneous decision to start bowling bouncers as a spinner; it was a well-considered strategy, recognizing the psychological impact of a bouncer on a batter," he explained.
Additionally, he highlighted how his experience as a batter aids him in reading opposition players and predicting their tactics. "Being a batter myself allows me to think like one. I always aim to stay ahead in my thought process and focus on executing my skills effectively," he added.
LSG Defeats RCB in Thriller
In another development, the Lucknow Super Giants triumphed over the defending champions RCB by nine runs at Ekana Stadium on Thursday. The hosts scored 209 runs for 3 wickets in 19 overs, led by an impressive 111 runs off 56 balls from Mitchell Marsh, along with significant contributions from Nicholas Pooran and Rishabh Pant.
While chasing a target of 213 under the DLS method, RCB faced an early setback as Prince Yadav dismissed Virat Kohli for a duck on just his second ball. Despite a solid 95-run partnership between Rajat Patidar (61) and Devdutt Padikkal (34), along with late efforts from Tim David, Krunal Pandya, and Romario Shepherd, RCB ended their innings at 203 for 6, falling short by nine runs.
Prince Yadav (3/33) and Shahbaz Ahmed (2/33) were instrumental in LSG's bowling performance, while Marsh earned the Player of the Match award for his outstanding century.
