Police Complaint Filed Against TMC Rally Organizers

Kolkata, July 23: The Kolkata Police have initiated a suo motu complaint against the faction of the Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee, alleging “contempt of court” in connection with the Martyrs’ Day rally that took place on July 21 at Cathedral Road, near Birla Planetarium.

The complaint, lodged at Hastings Police Station, claims that the rally organizers breached a Calcutta High Court directive that mandated the event to be held in one lane of Cathedral Road, leaving the other lane unobstructed for traffic.

A police insider revealed that the High Court had previously allowed the rally under two stipulations: limiting attendance to 2,500 participants and ensuring that only one lane was used for the event.

However, the complaint asserts that the actual turnout exceeded the allowed number, resulting in both lanes of Cathedral Road being closed to traffic.

“The High Court's instructions were explicit regarding the use of one lane for the rally. Yet, as the event commenced, supporters gathered on both sides of the road, leading to traffic disruptions. The police had to reroute vehicles to maintain order, which caused significant traffic delays. This clear disregard for the court's order constitutes contempt, prompting the Hastings Police to file charges against the rally's conveners and organizers,” stated the police insider.

Additionally, another suo motu complaint has been filed regarding alleged vandalism at the rally site on the night of July 20. According to reports, a group of approximately 15 youths on motorcycles approached the venue, shouted slogans, and caused disturbances by tearing down banners.

They fled the scene when confronted by police, leaving behind two motorcycles, which have since been recovered. Authorities are currently working to identify the individuals involved.
