Wasim Jaffer, a former cricketer, has shed light on KL Rahul's frustrations during his time with the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Jaffer noted that the team's tendency to lose matches from winning positions left Rahul feeling 'deeply frustrated'.
Rahul played for PBKS from 2018 to 2021, captaining the team during this period. Jaffer was the head coach of PBKS from 2019 to 2021. In the 2020 season, Rahul excelled, earning the Orange Cap with 670 runs in 14 innings, averaging 55.83 and striking at 129.34, including a century and five fifties. Despite his individual success, the team finished sixth in both seasons.
Insights into Rahul's Frustration
During an appearance on The Great Indian Cricket Show, Jaffer shared his experiences coaching PBKS. He described Rahul as typically calm and reserved, rarely showing anger. However, he recalled moments when Rahul's frustration became evident during tight matches.
Jaffer remarked, 'KL is usually very composed and keeps to himself. He doesn't often socialize outside his close circle. It's uncommon to see him lose his cool.' He recounted how close losses during Rahul's captaincy led to visible frustration, particularly after games that should have been won.
Heartbreaking Near Misses
In the 2020 season, PBKS faced tough losses, including a Super Over defeat against Delhi Capitals and a narrow two-run loss to Kolkata Knight Riders while chasing 165 runs. These losses were critical for PBKS's standings.
The team concluded the season with six wins and eight losses, totaling 12 points, while Royal Challengers Bengaluru secured the final playoff spot with 14 points. Similar heartbreaks continued into the next season, with PBKS losing by two runs to Rajasthan Royals and six runs to RCB, again missing the playoffs.
KL Rahul's IPL Journey
Under Shreyas Iyer's captaincy, PBKS experienced a turnaround, finishing as runners-up in the 2025 season. However, they narrowly missed the playoffs in the last season despite a strong start.
KL Rahul remains PBKS's top run-scorer, amassing 2,548 runs in 55 matches at an impressive average of 56.62 and a strike rate nearing 140, including two centuries and 23 fifties. From 2022 to 2024, he played for Lucknow Super Giants, scoring 1,410 runs in 38 innings, leading the team to the playoffs twice.
Since 2025, Rahul has revitalized his T20I career with Delhi Capitals, scoring 1,132 runs in 27 innings at an average of 49.21 and a strike rate exceeding 161. This season, he scored 593 runs in 14 innings, averaging 45.61 and striking at 174.41, including a century and five fifties, with a standout score of 152*, marking a historic achievement as the first Indian to score over 150 runs in the IPL.
