KKR's Spin Department Faces Mixed Fortunes Ahead of Upcoming Match
Strengthening KKR's Spin Attack
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are set to enhance their spin bowling lineup as Sunil Narine, a key player, has recovered from an illness that sidelined him during the rain-affected match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Monday.
However, there is uncertainty surrounding the availability of Varun Chakravarthy, the team's second spinner, for the upcoming match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) due to a left-hand injury. This injury also kept him out of the PBKS game. Varun was seen with his hand wrapped in tape while on the bench, and no timeline for his return has been established. He sustained this injury during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) last week, according to reports.
Narine's Return and Impact
KKR management reported that Narine had been dealing with an "abdominal issue," which prevented him from participating in the PBKS match. This marked the first time since the 2019 season that both spinners were absent from the playing XI. Narine resumed training on Tuesday and is expected to significantly strengthen KKR's bowling attack, which has been weakened by injuries and player absences. In the match against PBKS, Anukul Roy was the only spinner to take the field for KKR.
Recent Performance of Spinners
Varun has struggled recently, failing to take wickets and proving costly in both matches. He recorded figures of 0/48 against Mumbai Indians (MI) over four overs and conceded 31 runs in just two overs against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). His performance has declined since the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup, where he initially took nine wickets in four group matches but managed only five wickets in five matches from the Super Eight opener to the final against New Zealand, while also leaking runs.
In contrast, Narine has performed relatively better, achieving figures of 1/30 against MI and 0/39 against SRH.
KKR's Current Standing in the Tournament
After suffering defeats in both matches against MI and SRH, and earning just a point from the washed-out game against PBKS, KKR currently sits at the eighth position in the tournament standings.
