KKR Secures Crucial Victory Over MI in IPL 2026 Showdown
KKR Triumphs Over MI to Keep Playoff Hopes Alive
On Wednesday, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) achieved a significant victory against the already eliminated Mumbai Indians (MI) at Eden Gardens, winning by four wickets. This win keeps KKR's hopes for the IPL 2026 playoffs alive, largely due to a stellar performance from veteran player Manish Pandey.
Batting at the number three position, the 36-year-old Pandey scored 45 runs off 33 deliveries, hitting six boundaries, which brought KKR closer to the modest target of 148 runs on a challenging pitch.
Manish Pandey Reflects on His Performance
After being named Player of the Match, Pandey expressed his thoughts: "This was the only game I've actually batted in, as I was padded up and waiting to play, but didn't get the chance in the first four matches. This one felt special. I aimed to stay at the crease and help our team win, which we accomplished. I had some good partnerships with Rovman and others, and I hope we can replicate this success in future games."
Pandey, a key player in KKR's IPL title victories in 2014 and 2024, acknowledged the team's management for their continued faith in him, stating, "That might be why I'm still here. It feels great to be supported by KKR."
Pandey on Work Ethic and Fielding
Discussing his dedication, Pandey noted, "We typically practice batting for about an hour and spend around 45 minutes on fielding every day, regardless of the weather conditions."
He added, "Since I don't bowl, I take pleasure in fielding and aim to contribute through saving runs, taking spectacular catches, and executing run-outs. I take pride in being able to add value to the team in any way possible, and that motivates me to keep pushing forward."
Match Summary
In the match, KKR chose to bowl first after winning the toss. A quickfire 32* off 18 balls from Corbin Bosch helped MI reach 147/8 in their 20 overs, with Saurabh Dubey, Kartik Tyagi, and Cameron Green each taking two wickets.
During the chase, Pandey and Rovman Powell, who scored 40 runs off 30 balls with four boundaries and two sixes, led KKR to victory in 18.5 overs, finishing with four wickets in hand.
This win marks KKR's sixth victory in their last seven matches, keeping their playoff aspirations alive. With six wins, six losses, and one no result, KKR currently sits in sixth place on the points table, while MI is in ninth with four wins and nine losses.
