KKR Faces Injury Challenges Ahead of Upcoming Season

Injury Update on Akash Deep

The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are grappling with another injury issue as Indian fast bowler Akash Deep is expected to miss the upcoming season due to a stress injury in his lower back, as reported by a sports news outlet on Saturday.

According to the report, Akash Deep requires an additional three months for recovery. His last competitive match was against Jammu and Kashmir during the Ranji Trophy 2025/26 in mid-February. He had a commendable season with Bengal, claiming 22 wickets across six matches with an average of 27.13, including a four-wicket haul and a five-wicket performance.

KKR's Bowling Lineup Faces Setbacks

This injury adds to the woes of KKR's fast bowling unit, as Indian pacer Harshit Rana is also likely to be sidelined due to his own injury. Additionally, Sri Lankan bowler Matheesha Pathirana is anticipated to miss the initial phase of the competition due to injury. Pathirana was acquired by KKR for Rs 18 crores last season, and their absence significantly diminishes the international experience within the bowling squad.

Potential Pace Options

Vaibhav Arora, who has developed a strong bowling partnership with Harshit over the past few seasons, may take on a leading role in the pace attack, alongside Zimbabwean bowler Blessing Muzarabani, who is stepping in for Bangladesh's Mustafizur Rahman.

The pace lineup will also include emerging talents like Umran Malik and Kartik Tyagi. Cameron Green, a seam-bowling all-rounder, is another option, although his injury history may necessitate careful management of his workload.

Search for New Talent

As KKR prepares for the tournament, they have lost Mustafizur after releasing him from the squad on the BCCI's directive due to concerns regarding minority issues affecting Hindus in Bangladesh.

The team is actively seeking trials to find an Indian fast bowler to replace Rana, as they work to strengthen and rejuvenate their pace attack ahead of the new season.
