KKR Captain Ajinkya Rahane Discusses Bowling Strategies Amidst Team Struggles

Bowling Strategies Tailored to Match Conditions

Ajinkya Rahane, the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), shared insights on how bowling decisions are influenced by the dynamics of the match rather than adhering to a strict four-over limit. He emphasized the importance of evaluating a bowler's current form and confidence during the game. Rahane initially intended for Varun Chakaravarthy to complete his overs, but the aggressive batting from the opposition necessitated a strategic shift. He commended Anukul Roy for his impressive performance and noted his recent success in domestic cricket, highlighting that even seasoned players like Sunil Narine might bowl fewer overs if they are not performing well. This discussion follows Chakaravarthy's limited two-over spell against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Thursday in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), where he gave away 31 runs and managed just one dot ball in 12 deliveries.

Backing Chakaravarthy During Challenging Times

Rahane expressed his belief that Chakaravarthy, a dedicated team player, is currently facing a challenging period and requires unwavering support from his teammates. He mentioned that allowing Chakaravarthy to bowl fewer overs, or even none at all in certain matches, could be beneficial for restoring his confidence. 'Varun is a team player who is navigating through a tough phase. Sometimes, limiting his bowling to just two or even one over can aid in rebuilding his confidence. We want him to regain his self-assurance throughout the tournament,' Rahane stated.

KKR's Challenging Start to IPL 2026

KKR has encountered a rough beginning to the season, suffering defeats in their first two matches, marking only the second instance in the franchise's history. They faced a significant 65-run loss to SRH on Thursday, as the opposing team delivered a strong all-around performance to secure their first win of IPL 2026. The three-time IPL champions are eager to recover quickly, with upcoming matches scheduled at home against Punjab Kings on April 6 and Lucknow Super Giants on April 9.
