Union Minister Celebrates Asmita Dey's Achievement

On Thursday, Kiren Rijiju, the Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, extended his congratulations to judoka Asmita Dey for her groundbreaking victory as the first Indian to secure a gold medal in judo at the Commonwealth Games. He emphasized that her accomplishment serves as a source of motivation for aspiring athletes nationwide.

In a post shared on X, Rijiju expressed his pride in meeting Dey, commending her commitment and hard work. He stated, "I am immensely proud to welcome Asmita Dey, the first Indian to win a Commonwealth Games Gold Medal in Judo. Hailing from a modest background in Tripura, she is currently serving in the Uttar Pradesh Government. I congratulated her on this remarkable achievement at the #CWG2026."

The Minister highlighted that Dey's success is a testament to her years of dedication and effort. He remarked, "Her extraordinary achievement showcases years of hard work and determination, inspiring countless young judokas across the nation."

Rijiju also acknowledged Dey's coach, Yashpal Solanki, for his significant contribution to her success, stating, "I also congratulated her coach, Shri Yashpal Solanki ji, for his invaluable guidance and support in this historic achievement."

Tripura Chief Minister Honors Asmita Dey

Earlier, on Wednesday, Tripura's Chief Minister Manik Saha met with Asmita Dey to honor her for winning India's first-ever Gold Medal in Judo at the Commonwealth Games.

During their meeting at Tripura Bhawan in the national capital, the Chief Minister praised Dey for her exceptional achievement and commended her determination, discipline, and dedication, as stated in a press release.

"Asmita Dey's historic accomplishment on the global stage marks a significant milestone for Indian sports and is a source of immense pride for Tripura. Her dedication and sporting excellence have brought pride to both the state and the nation," remarked Chief Minister Saha.

"Her journey from Tripura to the pinnacle of international sports will inspire millions of young athletes across the country. The State Government is committed to supporting our youth, enhancing the sports ecosystem, and nurturing talented athletes to help them excel on both national and international platforms," he added.

India's First Judo Gold at Commonwealth Games

Asmita Dey secured the women's -48kg gold medal by defeating Canada's Heidi Quach in a thrilling final that went into Golden Score, marking India's inaugural judo gold medal at the Games.

She was later joined on the podium by Harsh Singh, who also won gold, Yamini Mourya, who earned silver, and Unnati Sharma, who took home bronze, bringing India's total judo medal count to four.
