Kieron Pollard Takes Charge as Head Coach of Mumbai Indians
Kieron Pollard Appointed as Mumbai Indians Head Coach
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], October 24: Kieron Pollard has been named the new head coach of the Mumbai Indians (MI). In his first remarks after the announcement, Pollard acknowledged the team's struggles in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and emphasized the need for improvement. He expressed a desire to see MI's blue flags dominating the Wankhede Stadium, contrasting them with the red and yellow colors of rival teams like Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Pollard's promotion from batting coach to head coach comes ahead of the IPL 2027 season, succeeding Mahela Jayawardene in this role.
Pollard's Vision for Team Restoration
In his initial interview post-appointment, Pollard outlined his primary objective: to identify the necessary steps to restore MI's former glory, as the team has not clinched an IPL title since 2020 and has faced three bottom-table finishes, including two last-place finishes. He stated, "My first task is to understand what needs to be done. We want to see the blue flag flying at Wankhede Stadium, and that passion must come from us first."
Prioritizing Team Success Over Individual Glory
Pollard candidly acknowledged MI's underwhelming performance in recent years, particularly over the last two seasons. He stressed the importance of prioritizing team success over individual accolades, stating, "We recognize that we have not been where we wanted to be. We will strive to play for the badge and remind our opponents of our glorious past."
Focusing on Fun and Team Culture
Pollard also highlighted his belief in maintaining a fun and relaxed atmosphere, regardless of match outcomes. He remarked, "Setting the tone for the team is crucial. I believe in fun, entertainment, and relaxation, as it allows players to perform better. Even if results are not favorable, I will remain unfazed because, at the end of the day, it’s just a game of cricket."
Pollard's Legacy with Mumbai Indians
Having retired from the IPL in November 2022, Pollard transitioned to the role of batting coach for IPL 2023. Since joining MI in 2010, he has been a key player, contributing significantly to the team's success. Over 189 matches, he scored 3,412 runs at an average of 28.67, including 16 half-centuries, and took 69 wickets for the franchise.
