Bhaichung Bhutia Praises Khelo India Tribal Games

Former Indian football star Bhaichung Bhutia has commended the Khelo India Tribal Games, recognizing it as an excellent opportunity for athletes from tribal communities. He emphasized the vast potential for sports within these regions. In the recent competition, Chhattisgarh secured ninth place in the medal standings, achieving 3 gold, 10 silver, and 6 bronze medals. Karnataka emerged as the overall champions, amassing 23 gold, 8 silver, and 7 bronze medals. Odisha followed closely, finishing second with 21 gold, 15 silver, and 21 bronze medals, becoming the only state to surpass 50 total medals with a count of 57. Jharkhand claimed third place with 16 gold, 8 silver, and 11 bronze.

Bhutia and Mary Kom Emphasize Grassroots Development

During a media interaction at the Khelo India Tribal Games 2026, six-time World Championship medallist Mary Kom and Bhutia highlighted the critical need for grassroots investment and structured development pathways. They urged Indian families to encourage children to engage in sports rather than spend excessive time on screens.

Bhutia Advocates for Grassroots Investment

Bhutia, a prominent figure in Indian football, pointed out that while initiatives like the Khelo India Tribal Games are promising, the long-term success of sports in India relies on strengthening foundational support. He reflected on his own experiences, noting the significant role of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in nurturing young talent during a time when sports infrastructure was still developing. "I was part of the first batch of SAI in 1986. Investing in grassroots is essential, yet we often neglect it in favor of focusing on elite levels," he remarked, stressing the importance of sustained attention at the grassroots level.

The Abundance of Talent in Tribal Regions

He acknowledged the rich sporting talent present in tribal communities, particularly from the Northeast, where numerous athletes have excelled on the global stage. "Providing young individuals with a platform is crucial. I believe that in the future, we will witness an influx of talent from tribal backgrounds, and this is merely the beginning," he stated.

Cultural Influence on Sports in Sikkim

Bhutia also shared insights about how environment and access shape athletes, reminiscing about his upbringing. "In the Northeast, you typically engage in either football or music. That was my reality. Growing up, football was the predominant sport in Sikkim, played in every village and town," he explained.

Mary Kom Celebrates the Initiative

Mary Kom echoed Bhutia's sentiments, lauding the Khelo India Tribal Games as a transformative initiative that addresses longstanding gaps in access and awareness. "I want to congratulate the Chhattisgarh Government for launching the Khelo India Tribal Games here. I wholeheartedly support this initiative because our tribal communities possess immense potential. In the past, they lacked platforms and awareness, which hindered many talented children from progressing further," said the 2012 London Olympics bronze medallist boxer.

Government Initiatives Changing the Landscape

The celebrated boxer from Manipur also noted how government-backed programs are reshaping the sporting landscape. "Thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Khelo India and Fit India initiatives, children are increasingly taking the initiative to participate and represent the country. This is a significant development for India's sporting future," she added.
