Political Shift in Chirang

Chirang, Mar 2: In a significant political move, Khampa Borgoyari, a prominent figure in the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), has joined the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) during a rally in Chirang on Monday, marking a crucial moment ahead of the Assembly elections.

Borgoyari, who previously held the position of vice-president in UPPL and was an executive member as well as the Leader of the Opposition in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), has officially resigned from his party roles. He submitted his resignation to UPPL president Pramod Boro on Sunday.

“I did resign from the party yesterday. My political journey began with the formation of the BPF in 2003 when the BTC was established. However, after experiencing differences in opinion over the past year, I transitioned from BPF to UPPL. I have come to realize that the foundational goals of the BTC are not being pursued effectively,” Borgoyari stated.

He expressed confidence that the BPF, as a regional entity, is better equipped to serve the community's interests. “This is why I have chosen to return to the BPF. I aim to work with the same vision and objectives that I shared with Hagrama Mohilary in the past,” he added.

Hagrama Mohilary, the BPF chief and BTC Chief Executive Member, confirmed Borgoyari's return, noting that Mauti Brahma Hajoary and Dr. Sangrang Brahma have also joined the party.

“Today, Khampa Borgoyari has officially joined the BPF. Alongside him, UPPL's founding general secretary Hajoary and the youth president Brahma are also joining us. We expect around 500 new members today, which will significantly strengthen Chirang district,” Mohilary remarked.

Hajoary criticized UPPL's performance during the BTC elections, stating, “The party did not operate effectively during the BTC elections. Over the last five years, the contributions of party workers were overlooked, leading to our defeat in the BTC polls.”

He reflected on his tenure as general secretary of UPPL since its inception in 2015, emphasizing the need to work for the people. “Despite our efforts and support from many, our performance in the last BTC election was disappointing. Now, I want to focus on serving the community. Hagrama may be a man of few words, but he takes strong action,” Hajoary concluded.

These developments are likely to spark further political realignments in the Bodoland region as the elections approach.
