Key Issues Shaping Assam's 2026 Legislative Assembly Elections

Overview of the Upcoming Elections

Guwahati, March 15:  The Election Commission of India (ECI) has set April 9 as the date for the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections. This announcement has brought several politically sensitive topics to the forefront, which are expected to influence the campaign strategies of major political parties leading up to the elections.

Major Issues in Focus

Key issues that will dominate the electoral landscape include immigration, eviction policies, the crackdown on child marriage, development initiatives, and the controversy surrounding the death of cultural icon Zubeen Garg.

Immigration Concerns

Immigration has been a longstanding issue in Assam, significantly impacting the state's political climate. The ruling BJP government asserts that it has made strides in fulfilling the commitments outlined in the Assam Accord. However, opposition parties are likely to criticize the government for failing to provide adequate protections for the cultural and linguistic identity of the indigenous Assamese population.

Opposition leaders will also argue that the Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has unjustly targeted legitimate Indian citizens while attempting to address immigration from Bangladesh. This topic will be particularly emphasized in constituencies with a significant Muslim population.

Discussions surrounding the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) are expected to be prominent during the campaign, with the ruling party defending the CAA against claims of unreasonableness.

Eviction Policies

The government's approach to evicting alleged encroachers, primarily from the Muslim community, will be a contentious issue. The ruling coalition will argue that it is reclaiming government land, while the opposition will frame this as a humanitarian crisis, highlighting the displacement of families and loss of livelihoods.

Child Marriage Crackdown

The state's initiatives to combat child marriage, which have resulted in numerous arrests under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), will also be a focal point. The ruling party will tout these measures as essential for social progress, while the opposition may accuse the government of disproportionately targeting the Muslim community.

Development and Welfare Initiatives

The Assam government plans to showcase its development projects, including infrastructure improvements in transportation and the establishment of new facilities, such as the Tata Group semiconductor unit. The ruling party will emphasize its welfare schemes aimed at women, which are crucial given that women represent nearly half of the electorate.

Conversely, the opposition will argue that development has been uneven and detrimental to indigenous communities, whose lands have been appropriated for these projects. They will also point out that despite welfare initiatives, crimes against women remain a pressing issue.

Zubeen Garg's Death

The death of popular singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore in September 2025 has sparked significant public interest and demands for justice regarding the circumstances surrounding his passing. Opposition parties will claim that the BJP government is not committed to ensuring accountability, while the ruling party will highlight its establishment of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to address the matter.

Current Political Landscape

The Assam Assembly consists of 126 members, with the BJP holding 64 seats, supported by its allies, including the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL). The opposition is led by the Indian National Congress, which has 26 seats, along with other parties like the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).
