Keshav Maharaj, the captain of the Pretoria Capitals, attributes the franchise's impressive performance in Season 4 of the SA20 to the new leadership team he established with head coach Sourav Ganguly. Maharaj emphasized that Ganguly played a crucial role in fostering a positive team atmosphere, which significantly contributed to their journey to the finals, where they ultimately lost to the three-time champions, Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC). The Pretoria Capitals have now been runners-up twice in the SA20, narrowly missing the title in both the inaugural and the latest seasons. They are set to kick off Season 5 against the defending champions on January 17 next year.
Creating a Unique Team Environment
In an exclusive interview with SA20, Maharaj shared insights about his collaboration with Ganguly, stating, "In tournaments like this, establishing a strong team culture is essential, and Sourav excelled in that area. Many players embraced our goals. During the tournament, even when we weren't playing, we would gather in the team room for dinner, watch other matches, and discuss cricket. The energy and excitement within the team were truly special." He expressed hope that the unique culture they built would endure for future generations.
Looking Ahead to the New Season
As the Capitals prepare for their Season 5 opener against the Sunrisers, Maharaj is focused on the future rather than reflecting on past disappointments. He remarked, "While the public may see it as a chance for revenge, our priority is to put our best foot forward. Starting the competition strongly, especially against the defending champions, would be a significant step in the right direction for the new season." Maharaj's leadership was pivotal, as he took 12 wickets in 12 matches with an impressive economy rate of 6.54, helping the Capitals reach the finals.

Maharaj also expressed gratitude towards the Highveld crowd, noting that they exceeded his expectations during his first season in Centurion after three seasons with Durban's Super Giants. He stated, "Transitioning to play in Pretoria was exciting, especially looking forward to the crowd, and they truly delivered. Their support through both good and challenging times was phenomenal. Centurion is a fantastic venue for cricket, and the way the fans embraced us was exactly what we needed to motivate us to reach the finals."
