Kerala Transport Minister Warns Against Misuse of Free Bus Travel Scheme for Women

Strict Measures Against Misuse of Zero Ticket Scheme

Kannur, July 27 - The Transport Minister of Kerala, C.P. John, issued a stern warning on Monday regarding the misuse of the state’s 'Priyadarshini Free Bus Travel Scheme' designed for women. He stated that strict actions will be taken against Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) conductors who intentionally issue zero tickets to male passengers. The minister emphasized that those found guilty could face suspension or even termination from service.

John clarified that no leniency would be shown towards employees, regardless of their affiliation with any labor organization, if they are found guilty. In a conversation with reporters, he mentioned that initially, some conductors claimed that zero tickets were mistakenly issued to male passengers. However, the government has intensified its investigation into these irregularities.

He warned that if anyone is found deliberately engaging in such practices, they would face severe consequences, including suspension or dismissal. Issuing zero tickets to male passengers while collecting fares is considered a serious violation. He cautioned that conductors engaging in such actions are undermining the very scheme they are part of, as the government compensates KSRTC for operating this initiative.

The minister also condemned incidents where employees of the Priyadarshini scheme buses were allegedly obstructed or assaulted by private bus workers. He stated that such attacks are completely unacceptable and that strict legal action will be taken against those responsible. Police actions against individuals involved in assaults on Priyadarshini bus staff will continue.

Additionally, he warned those contemplating such actions to refrain from doing so. Acknowledging the concerns raised by private bus operators regarding the scheme, John mentioned that the government would make appropriate decisions after receiving the report from the Padmakumar committee, which was formed to study the issues faced by the private bus sector. He expressed hope that the committee would make recommendations that address the concerns of private operators without compromising the interests of KSRTC.

The minister also expressed optimism that the current heavy crowds on Priyadarshini buses, particularly to tourist destinations like Gavi, would gradually return to normal. The Priyadarshini scheme, initiated by the Kerala government, allows women to travel for free on KSRTC's ordinary bus services. This initiative was one of the key electoral promises made by the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) during the recent assembly elections.

Under this scheme, women are issued free bus travel tickets, referred to as 'zero tickets.'
