Kerala Set to Announce New Chief Minister After Assembly Election Results
New Leadership Expected in Kerala
More than ten days after the announcement of the Kerala assembly election results, the state is poised to unveil its new Chief Minister on Thursday. The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) is expected to reveal the name of the leader of its legislative party during a meeting of newly elected legislators scheduled for this afternoon.
KPCC President Sunny Joseph had previously announced that the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) meeting would take place on May 14 at 1 PM. This announcement comes after the Congress high command indicated that the name of the next Chief Minister would be disclosed on Thursday, following several days of discussions with party leaders from the southern state.
Party General Secretary Jairam Ramesh shared this information after a meeting between Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge at Kharge's residence in New Delhi.
The United Democratic Front (UDF), led by Congress, has secured more than a two-thirds majority in the Kerala assembly elections. However, due to factional alignments and grassroots opposition from party workers, a decision regarding the Chief Ministerial candidate has yet to be made. Prominent names in contention for the Chief Minister position include K.C. Venugopal, General Secretary (Organization) of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), outgoing Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly V.D. Satheesan, and senior party leader Ramesh Chennithala.
