Kerala's Electoral Preparations Reach Final Stages

The grand celebration of democracy in Kerala is approaching its crucial phase. On Tuesday, Ratan U Kelkar, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the state, announced that all administrative and security measures are in place for the voting scheduled on April 9. A total of 883 candidates are contesting for 140 assembly seats in this election. Kelkar shared during a press conference that 30,495 polling stations have been established across the state, which includes 24 auxiliary polling centers necessitated by a special intensive review of the voter list.

New Polling Stations and Management

According to Kelkar, new polling stations will be set up in the districts of Kasaragod, Kannur, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Ernakulam. He noted that 352 of these stations will be managed by women, while 37 will be overseen by persons with disabilities. Additionally, 140 distribution and collection centers have been established, with ballot counting set to occur in 140 strongrooms.

Security Measures and Election Management

In managing the election process, 146,000 trained election officials have been deployed. To maintain law and order and ensure peaceful voting, 76,000 police personnel and central forces will be on duty.

Home Voting Initiative Receives Positive Response

This election cycle, the Election Commission introduced a 'home voting' option for senior citizens aged 85 and above, as well as for persons with disabilities (PwD). CEO Kelkar reported that over 96% of eligible voters in this category have already exercised their voting rights, indicating a positive trend in democratic participation.

Political Landscape

The primary contest in Kerala this time is between the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF), and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The LDF, led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, aims to return to power for a third consecutive term, while the UDF, led by Congress, is attempting to repeat its traditional cycle of power change.
