Kerala Police Orders Removal of Controversial Election Commission Posts Amid Tensions
Kerala Police Act on Election Commission Controversy
The Kerala Police have instructed social media platforms to eliminate posts related to a letter from the Election Commission that features the seal of the Bharatiya Janata Party's state unit. This directive follows a dispute that arose on Monday, with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) accusing that 'seals are being casually swapped.'
The Election Commission has attributed the issue to a clerical mistake.
As the Model Code of Conduct is currently in effect in the state ahead of the Assembly elections, the police are in communication with the Election Commission. In their directive, the police claimed that the posts in question 'blatantly insult' the electoral body and 'spread content that threatens communal harmony.'
Social media platform X notified various users, including journalists and opposition leaders, that it had been ordered by the police to remove posts due to alleged violations of Indian law. An Instagram post discussing the issue was also blocked.
Supreme Court Ruling on Scheduled Caste Status
The Supreme Court has ruled that only individuals from the Hindu, Buddhist, and Sikh faiths can claim Scheduled Caste status. The court stated that a Dalit individual who converts to any religion outside of these three loses their Scheduled Caste status, irrespective of their original status.
This ruling was made in response to an appeal from a pastor challenging an Andhra Pradesh High Court decision from April. The pastor claimed he experienced caste discrimination and abuse, but the High Court dismissed the case, stating that the individual no longer held Scheduled Caste status after converting to Christianity.
US-Iran Talks Speculation
The White House has refrained from making definitive comments regarding reports that the United States plans to engage in talks with Iran in Islamabad, Pakistan, later this week. This statement follows a report from a financial publication suggesting that Pakistan is proposing Islamabad as a potential venue for these discussions.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif mentioned on Monday that he had a conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, but did not confirm if they discussed the proposed negotiations.
Meanwhile, global oil prices remain elevated due to supply concerns, although there has been a slight decrease in rates. The Indian stock market saw a minor uptick on Tuesday after indications that the US, Israel, and Iran might negotiate to resolve the ongoing conflict.
Congress Criticizes Pakistan's Role in US-Iran Negotiations
The Congress party has stated that if reports of Pakistan acting as a mediator between the US, Israel, and Iran are accurate, it would represent a significant setback for India. Party leader Jairam Ramesh attributed this situation to the 'self-styled Vishwaguru,' referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Ramesh also criticized Modi's recent visit to Israel, which occurred just days before the US-Israel attacks on Iran commenced.
CBI Appeals Supreme Court Ruling on Manipur Case
The Central Bureau of Investigation has approached the Supreme Court to contest the bail granted to two individuals accused of sexually assaulting and parading two Kuki women during the ethnic violence in Manipur in 2023. The Gauhati High Court had granted bail in September, citing significant delays in the trial, primarily due to the CBI's shortcomings.
A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and N Kotiswar Singh has issued a notice to the accused, requesting their response.
