Investigation Launched Over Fake Video Scam

Thiruvananthapuram, August 9 - A senior officer from the Kerala police is under investigation following the circulation of a fake video created using artificial intelligence (AI), allegedly aimed at defrauding individuals. The police disclosed this information on Sunday.

The misleading video, which appeared as a 'reel' on Facebook, features Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) P. Vijayan in uniform. His image and voice were manipulated to promote a fraudulent scheme related to the sale of old currency notes.

According to officials, the altered video shows the officer claiming that no registration fee is required and that individuals could earn up to 2.5 million rupees. The police reported that this fake video was uploaded on a Facebook page on August 1, 2026. During cyber surveillance, the police identified the video, leading to the filing of a case at the Thiruvananthapuram Cyber Police Station on August 7.

The police have registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act for impersonation, fraud, and cybercrime. An investigation has commenced based on the mobile phone number linked to the Facebook account. Authorities are also looking into whether any individuals have been scammed using this method.

Additionally, the police are examining whether similar fake videos involving other police officials and political leaders have been disseminated on social media platforms.
