Kerala High Court Dismisses Election Challenge Against BJP MP Suresh Gopi

The Kerala High Court has dismissed a petition that sought to challenge BJP MP Suresh Gopi's victory in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Thrissur. The petition, filed by Independent candidate Joshi Villadom, accused Gopi of corrupt practices, including bribery and using religious appeals to influence voters. Another petition against Gopi is still pending, with similar allegations regarding unethical campaign strategies. Justice Kauser Edappagath ruled that the objections raised by Gopi were without merit, allowing the election petition to proceed. This ruling highlights ongoing controversies surrounding electoral practices in the region.

Court Ruling on Election Petition

On Tuesday, the Kerala High Court rejected a petition that contested the election victory of Bharatiya Janata Party MP Suresh Gopi in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Thrissur.

The challenge was brought forth by Joshi Villadom, who ran as an Independent candidate in the same elections.

Villadom accused Gopi of engaging in unethical electoral practices, including bribery, inciting discord among various groups, and leveraging religious sentiments to gain votes.

There is another election petition against Gopi that is still under consideration by the High Court.

On April 1, the court deemed a petition from Binoy AS, a leader of the All India Youth Federation and a Thrissur voter, as maintainable.

Binoy AS is seeking to have Gopi's election declared invalid under the Representation of the People Act.

Similar to Villadom's claims, Binoy AS alleged that Gopi, along with his election team, participated in corrupt practices, including the use of religious imagery in campaign materials and making promises of monetary or other incentives to sway voters.

The petition highlighted campaign materials featuring Gopi alongside images of Hindu deities Krishna and Radha, as well as the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, accompanied by messages that invoked religious sentiments.

It also asserted that BJP leaders encouraged voters to base their electoral decisions on religious affiliations during their speeches.

Justice Kauser Edappagath dismissed Gopi's preliminary objections aimed at quashing the petition, stating that they were without merit and that the election petition should proceed.
