Kerala Governor Expresses Discontent Over Incomplete National Anthem Performance
Governor's Displeasure at Assembly
On Friday, Kerala's Governor Rajendra Arlekar voiced his dissatisfaction regarding the incomplete rendition of 'Vande Mataram' during a policy speech at the state assembly. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan responded by stating that there is no legal requirement for the full performance of the national anthem. Before and after the Governor's address, the Kerala Police Band played only the first two stanzas of 'Vande Mataram', despite directives from the Lok Sabha mandating its complete rendition in the presence of the Governor.
Protocol and Legal Aspects
Governor Arlekar emphasized the necessity of adhering to proper protocol during such events. He mentioned that he had discussed the matter with the assembly speaker and is awaiting further developments. In contrast, Chief Minister Satheesan pointed out that no legal provision mandates the full singing of 'Vande Mataram', noting that Parliament has not enacted any law on this issue. He expressed willingness to discuss the matter with the Governor if any complaints arise.
Political Reactions
BJP legislator V. Muraleedharan criticized the incident as an insult to the Governor and the assembly, accusing the UDF government of yielding to pressure from parties like CPI(M) and Jamaat-e-Islami. Opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan supported the state government's decision not to fully perform the national anthem, labeling it as part of the RSS agenda.
